Know The Early Signs of Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is becoming more and more prevalent in today’s society.  ASD is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is characterized by deficits in social communication and social interactions and by restrictive, repetitive patterns of behavior.

The signs and symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorder can vary; however, there are early signs that parents may notice around 12 to 18 months of age.

The National Autism Center has complied a list of early warning signs to look for in your infant or toddler.

Early Warning Signs of Autism Spectrum Disorder:

1.     No one-word communications by 16 months

2.     Loss of skills at any time

3.     Not responding to sounds, voices, or name

4.     No social smiling by 6 months

5.     No two-word phrases by 24 months

6.     Not showing items or sharing interests

7.     Unusual attachment to one particular toy or object

8.     No babbling, pointing, or meaningful gestures by 12 months

9.     Poor eye contact

If you have concerns about your child’s developmental milestones or observe early signs of autism spectrum disorder it is best to contact your pediatrician immediately.  Early intervention can drastically improve their child’s outcomes of success later in life.
